When we think of Baltimore professional baseball—we think The Orioles. But they weren’t the first professional baseball team in Baltimore. What was the name of Baltimore’s first team? Hint—this name also flies…
Although not always remembered today as a great baseball town, Baltimore has a strong baseball tradition. The Baltimore Canaries became the city’s first professional team from 1872 to 1874 when they joined the National Association of Professional Baseball Players. The team was usually listed as Lord Baltimore in the box scores of the day, and was also referred to as the Yellow Stockings. The canary and yellow stockings labels were in reference to their uniform colors. Baltimore loves its birds!
