Reporting Greg Carpenter
I knew the game was a sell out. I knew everyone was going to wear orange. I knew emotions would be high as we honor Cal and cheer our Orioles as they battle for first. What I didn’t expect was the shear insanity, sense of togetherness, and re-birth of Orioles Magic.
This game, by far, fits into my top 5 games of all time that I’ve attended at both Oriole Park and Memorial Stadium. And, I’ve been to some good ones…like Tippy picking off three at 1st on August 24th 1983, or the playoff games in ’96 and ’97, or the 2130 and 2131 games.
Oriole Park was CRAZY. Every single person was in a good mood and super-charge for every pitch. In several innings, fans were standing. I haven’t seen that in years. Oh, and, the scoreboard didn’t have to tell us when to cheer.
Now, add to that, the Orioles hit 6 home runs.
My nephew and son were there. They are 17 and 11. They’ve never experienced anything like this at Camden Yards, ever. They had the time of their lives. They hung on every pitch. They went crazy with every Oriole hit, every Yankee Strike, and every Yankee out.
Now, the next generation knows what we’ve been talking about for two decades. They know what it’s like when ‘something magic happens.’
They know Orioles Magic 2.0.
