Reporting Fran Lane
There’s no place like it. Still, quiet, and peaceful; the crypt and undercroft of the Baltimore Basilica is open to the public. The Bascilica’s undercroft was filled with sand from the original building of the cathedral, which prevented the Bascilica’s architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s vision of a chapel there. During the Bascilica’s restoration, the tons of sand were removed, and the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Chapel was finally realized.
Eight of the twelve deceased Archbishops of Baltimore are laid to rest in the Basilica’s historic crypt located beneath the main altar, next to the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Chapel.
