Reporting Fran Lane
It’s the O’s home opener today. We all know the Orioles, but what was the name of Baltimore’s first professional baseball team? Hint—this name also flies.
Baltimore has a strong baseball tradition. The Baltimore Canaries became the city’s first professional team from 1872 to 1874 when they joined the National Association of Professional Baseball Players. The team was usually listed as Lord Baltimore in the box scores of the day, and was also referred to as the Yellow Stockings. The canary and yellow stockings labels were in reference to their uniform colors. Baltimore loves its birds!
