Reporting Fran Lane
Remember the old Haussner’s on Eastern Avenue? For 76 years, Haussner’s Restaurant was the “must visit” restaurant in Baltimore as well as one of the most extraordinary in the country because of its very impressive collection of 19th Century European and American paintings that owners Frances and George Haussner collected over the years.
My family used to dine at Haussner’s on special occasions. On Saturday nights in its heyday, over 2000 dinners were served. As a kid, I was always fascinated with the big ball of string compiled by the employees for generations, using the string that bound rental napkins. The enormous bundle was 4 feet tall and weighed 825 pounds.
