The refrigeration of yesteryear is displayed at the historic Hampton Mansion in Towson.
Visitors can go into the Dairy—a large springhouse—and see how it worked. Cool water from a nearby spring bubbles to the ground and runs through a tap into a trough that surrounds the dairy floor. Urns of milk and tubs of butter were placed into the cold water to keep them from spoiling. The dairy maintained the temperature year round.
